Why You Need to Use the Right Shampoo
Could your shampoo be making your hair thinner? This conversation recently took place between the Telegraph’s beauty director and Gail Feredici. This is the lady whose 30-year hair career has seen her play a major role in developing the famous Frizz Ease range and the Root TouchUp by Color Wow.
But it was during her recent product development that she started to look more closely at the ingredients. She noticed that silicones and polymers were blocking the hair follicles on the scalp. This made hair appear dull and lacklustre. Researchers at the University of Miami then found that this could lead to hair thinning.
Further studies proved the difference between regular shampoo and conditioning shampoo. The latter left deposits for up to six days post-hair wash. The study showed that any shampoo with another function other than to clean (e.g de-frizz) may leave product deposits and damage scalp health. This could even cause irreversible damage by upsetting the hair growth cycle.
Brands are slowly moving towards a focus on shampoos that are kind to the scalp. Either way, it’s best to use a gentle cleansing shampoo that is fit for purpose. You can also look for products that will cleanse any build-up. Conditioning agents can be left where they should be – as Federici advises -“in conditioners and styling products.”
If you’re concerned that your shampoo has already had an impact on your hair, we would be happy to give you an assessment. Often earlier you catch an issue, the easier it is to fix.
